Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year, so we’ve come up with suggestions for a whole weekend on a romantic theme! With your partner, with your family, with friends or on your own, the Outaouais will warm your heart on Valentine’s Day.

Romance and a little history

Saturday, February 13

Go for a romantic stroll through historic Old Aylmer. Start at the marina, one of my favourite spots in the region, and walk up Principale Street with its many restaurants, cafés, shops, and stately 19th-century homes.

Along the way you’ll discover Béatrice et chocolats. Walking right by is not an option! Next, stop in for a drink at Bistro L’Autre Œil, where you can choose among more than 500 beers.

What could be nicer than to end your walk at suppertime in the relaxing setting of Le Bostaurus gastropub, featuring a live jazz duo?

Suggested accommodation: Double Tree by Hilton Gatineau–Ottawa

Sunday, February 14

Set your course for Old Chelsea and Biscotti & cie café and restaurant, just outside Gatineau Park.

Once you’ve fortified yourself with a fine café au lait, strap on your snowshoes (available for rent at the Visitor Centre) and set off to explore the historic ruins at the Mackenzie King Estate.

When dusk falls, spend a relaxing evening at Nordik Spa-Nature. Book the spa’s Valentine’s Day package including a table d’hôte dinner, or make reservations at L’Orée du Bois, which also offers a special Valentine’s Day menu.

Skating, good eats and culture

Saturday, February 13

Lace up your skates and limber up with a skate on the Brewery Creek rink (skate rental available on-site), then warm up at the family-friendly Winter BBQ hosted by the City of Gatineau’s Festival Urbain. Sample the fine beers brewed by Les Brasseurs du Temps, a perfect complement to home-made sausages by William J. Walter Saucissier.

Enjoy an evening of fun and laughter at the hilarious one-woman show Maman, si tu m’voyais... at the Théâtre de l’Île.

Suggested accommodation: Crowne Plaza Gatineau–Ottawa

Sunday, February 14

Start your day off right with breakfast at the convivial Café Cognac, then head for the Canadian Museum of History. Visit the permanent exhibitions, and be sure to check out the special touring exhibition Vikings—you’ll learn some surprising things!

Toast your weekend with a fine glass of wine selected by award-winning sommelière Véronique Rivest at Soif, her restaurant and wine bar.

 A memorable girls’ getaway

Saturday, February 13

Ladies, start your weekend on the right foot with a shopping expedition to Promenades Gatineau and a fine meal from Pastina gourmet food shop—you can eat in, or get takeout!

Next stop, Studio 157 for a cocoa body wrap … yummy! Relaxed and re-energized, you’re all set for dinner at Arôme Seafood and Grill and a fun-filled evening at the Casino du Lac-Leamy. For the ultimate party, check out ALÉA, the Casino’s spectacular destination nightclub.

Suggested accommodation: Hilton Lac-Leamy

Sunday, February 14

Start the day with brunch at the Saint-Éloi Café Bistro, followed by a visit to the exhibition World War Women at the Canadian War Museum.

Keep the conversation going over a plate of Pintxos, Basque-inspired finger food, at Les Vilains Garçons in the heart of Old Hull.

Family fun to gladden your heart

Saturday, February 13

Love is also celebrated as a family, and the kids will definitely love you for taking them to Parc Oméga, where they can feed the animals right from the car.

Drop in at the Fromagerie Montebello cheese factory on your way to ChocoMotive artisanal chocolate shop and economuseum. You certainly won’t go hungry in Montebello!

Spend the rest of the day exploring the beautiful grounds of Fairmont Le Château Montebello resort hotel, with new discoveries around every corner!

Sunday, February 14

After breakfast, take the whole gang to the Snowflake Kingdom in Jacques-Cartier Park to enjoy the final weekend of Winterlude. Celebrate the birthday of Noumi and Nouma, the Ice Hog twins, and meet your favourite characters from the movie La Guerre des Tuques 3D.

After such a busy weekend, you’ll be glad to get back home. Don’t forget to stock up on delicious take-out meals from Les Fougères restaurant!

Pick your favourite getaway and start planning your weekend. Don’t forget to make reservations at restaurants, hotels and performance venues.

Have a lovely Valentine’s Day!
