Given its location in the western part of the province, the Outaouais could be considered the Far West of Quebec! This week, I’m suggesting three activities with an Western equestrian theme.

St-André-Avellin Western Festival

The 16th annual St-André-Avellin Western Festival and Professional Rodeo runs until July 24 in the Petite-Nation. This week’s featured entertainers include Gregory Charles, Ariane Moffatt, and Dan Bigras and guests, plus several professional rodeos. Every day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., enjoy family fun at the Place de la famille!

Visit Old Hull on horseback

Until August 14, every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can tour downtown Gatineau in a horse-drawn calèche driven by coachmen (and women) and guides from Vieux Hull à cheval. Depart from in front of the Brasseurs du Temps microbrewery and pub, and explore the streets around Brewery Creek to the clip-clop of the horses’ hooves.

Go for a family horseback ride!

Have you ever been on a family horseback ride? If not, you should try it—it could turn out to be a highlight of your vacation. Ride through our beautiful region’s woods and meadows … on horseback! Several horse farms in the Outaouais offer trail rides of an hour and up. Contact Camp Équimax, Ranch El Pequeno, Gatineau Equestrian Park or Captiva Farms to book your excursion on one of the gorgeous summer days ahead.
