No need to go to a 5 star restaurant for a memorable dining experience. The small hidden treasures of restoration are an equally valid detour in Outaouais. Therefore, I invite you to regale yourself at the following stops.

A creole touch in Outaouais; that’s best way to summarize this gourmet stop. Located in the Petite-Nation, many consider Solex like a pearl of the West Indies located in the heart of the region. An interesting mixture of flavours, spices and traditional ingredients concocted by Vivianne, the Haitian co-owner, are on the menu. Pork, boar, creole chicken, goat sauce, red mullet, black beans and rice salad, and papaya juice are just some of the dishes that will awaken your taste buds. To enhance the experience, eat under the palapa (a thatched roof)!

La Binerie

Many people, heading towards Maniwaki and Mont Laurier, stop by Kazabazua to savor the famous beans of La Binerie. On one side, there’s a small log cabin, and on the other, a lovely pale blue house. Between the two lies a wood and metal sheet shed, where the beans are … wait for it … smoked in sand. Mixed during the day by the Quebec/Haitian duo, Marcelin and Sauphonie, beans, bacon and a few secret ingredients simmer overnight in large cast iron pots buried in the sand and covered with hot coals. The result is simply delicious: the best baked beans, "just firm enough, not too sweet, just a tad spicy."

Délice Champêtre

This must-stop gourmet snack bar features earthy and local products from Montebello and the Petite-Nation. Something new on the menu that you should try: the Blue Bonnet Burger. Served on artisan bread from the Grains de Vie bakery, the combination of tender beef, goat cheese from Fromagerie Montebello, homemade pear sauce and garden vegetables will delight you. Make sure to keep some room for the homemade gelato prepared on site!

I can hear you say: “The only thing missing is a cold brew”. Feel free to take you order to-go and enjoy it with a good beer from a local microbrewery at the Brasseurs de Montebello’s patio, located just a few steps away.
