The groundhog may have seen his shadow and Mother Nature may be reluctant to bring on the spring, but there’s a silver lining: more time to enjoy the region’s outdoor skating rinks! Here are three great skating spots to discover in the Outaouais.

Skating under the stars on the Canal Patro in Fort-Coulonge

In winter, the Canal Patro in Fort-Coulonge is transformed into a free public skating rink. The two-way channel is ideal for free skating and shinny hockey, and you can rent equipment on site: skates, helmets, and skating supports for beginners—everything you need!

And for you lovebirds, there’s nothing quite like skating hand-in-hand (or mitten-in-mitten) under a starry sky. The 1.5 km ice surface is lit until 8 p.m. every night.

Drop the puck on the Wakefield rink

You don’t have to be a guest at the Wakefield Mill Hotel & Spa to use the skating rink: it’s a municipal rink that’s open to everyone. And I tell you, there’s lots going on: free skating, shinny hockey, girls’ hockey clinics, and more. So I’d recommend checking the schedule before you lace up your skates.

And after a few figure-eights in the crisp winter air, you deserve a tasty hot chocolate at the Wakefield Mill!

Skating/sliding combo at the Lac-Simon Tourist Centre

Every year, the Centre touristique du Lac-Simon (Tourist Centre) floods one of its parking lots to create a skating rink that’s ideal for young families. And skating is just one of the activities offered at the Centre: for just $5 per person, you can go skating, tube sliding, AND cross-country skiing! Now that’s a great deal for an active day!

The 2015 “People’s Choice Award” contest is now officially open, with more than $6,000 in prizes to be won! From now to April 10, VOTE for your favourite regional tourist attractions! And follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram … remember our hashtag, #outaouaisfun.
