May 16–22: Three bike trips for the whole family
Warmer days are here at last: time for you and your family to dust off your bikes and hit the trail! Here are three suggested routes where you can discover the Outaouais on two wheels:
Nokia Sunday Bikedays
On Sunday, May 15, the National Capital Commission kicked off its 46th annual Nokia Sunday Bikedays program. Every Sunday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. (until September 4), enjoy cycling along more than 50 km of car-free parkways, and discover the scenic beauty of Ottawa and Gatineau Park.
Canadian Tulip Festival
Until May 23, the Canadian Tulip Festival fills the National Capital Region with a dazzling display of colourful blooms. Close to a million tulips of 100 different varieties line the bike paths in Gatineau and Ottawa. Organize a family bike ride and follow the Voyageurs, Ottawa River and Rideau Canal pathways to the muticoloured tulip beds at Commissioners Park beside Dow’s Lake.
Plaisance National Park
Plaisance National Park has 30 km of bike trails, but that’s not all! You can observe wildlife, participate in discovery activities, have a picnic, explore the Zizanie des marais (a marshland trail with floating boardwalks and a lookout tower), and even spend the night. Bike rental is available on site (free for children ages 17 and under accompanied by their family).
