It’s Oktoberfest in the Outaouais! Wunderbar!
Guten Morgen, liebe Freunde!
In centuries past, as october was approaching, Bavarians would gather in the town square to empty the beer kegs to make room for the new brew, fresh from the recent harvest. In order to do that, everyone would drink copious amounts of beer in order to waste as little of this precious nectar as possible. Quite the drinking bout would ensue, complete with schnitzels, sauerkraut and many kinds of wursts in the Biergartens, in order not to waste! Conservation techniques have evolved and it is no longer necessary to get ride of the old to make room for the new when the harvest are in but why take away from the people an occasion to get together over a (or several) full mug(s) and awesome food? Having fun is popular with just about any crowd and the spirit of Oktoberfest has quickly spreaded to lands far and near, beyond the German borders. Among these faraway lands is the Outaouais.
Here’s where to find a little bit of Munich in the region!
Oktoberfest du Vieux-Hull (October 7 and 8)
The tradition continues this year in the Laval-Aubry sector, as the local restaurateurs invite you to celebrate Bavarian-style with sauerkraut, sausages and other german delights, along with a good ol’ mug full of Hefeweizen in the Vieux-Hull’s unique atmosphere. Just seeing the space in traditional outfits will make it worth your while.

Oktoberfest in Ladysmith (September 30 to October 2)
How could we not mention Oktoberfest in an area that was largely settled by German immigrants? Ladysmith, in the Pontiac, has quite a large population of German descent and will celbrating this autumn ritual with music, good grub, great beer and activities for the whole family including a parade, a horseshoe tournament and local crafts. The whole village is waiting for you. You can find the whole program right here.
Aut’oberfest (September 30 to October 2)
There’s no denying it, Oktoberfest = copious amounts of beer. How fitting then that we have one of the largest beer menus in the province right here in Gatineau at L’Autre Œil. Of course, there will be music and the only thing that’ll might be crashing is the giant JENGA game.
Afterwards, a nice walk along Principale Street will help you deal with whatever excess you might have made.
Oktoberfest at Buffet des continents
To echo the origins of this event where eating was very much a part of the festivities, Buffet des continents came up with a typically German menu, available until October 2. So go fill that tummy as much as you like!
Ein Prosit and auf Wiedersehen!
