Although kids are back to school, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors with your family. How about horseback riding in the majestic landscapes of the Outaouais region? Sounds fun, isn’t? Or should I say : sounds #outaouaisfun, isn't? Here a few spots to do so.

Ferme Cabriole

Ferme Cabriole in Papineauville is an ideal place for a day out with the grandchildren! Start your family adventure with a visit to the farm—the kids will love meeting all the animals. Cradle the quail, cuddle the bunny rabbits, pet the sheep, say hello to the pigs, and meet the horses, of course. Then it’s time to head to the ring for a one-hour riding lesson with a qualified instructor. Relive these magic moments over a sandwich lunch at the picnic table. After their fun-filled day, the young ones will probably nap all the way home!

Captiva Farms

With 450 acres of woodland to explore on horseback, there’s always something new to see at Captiva Farms. Located in Wakefield, the stable has 61 horses and 14 ponies, and is proud to be the largest horseback riding farm in Eastern Canada. Whether you’re a novice equestrian or a seasoned expert, you’ll find the perfect mount for your trail ride. While you’re there, stop by and visit the other farm animals, including Billy the goat, the rabbits (yes, you can pick them up) and the two friendly llamas.

Travelling as a group? No problem: each trail ride can accommodate up to 40 people, and groups will be accompanied by experienced guides.

Camp Equimax

Camp Equimax in Low prides itself on its truly personalized service. When you arrive, you’ll be introduced to one of the stable’s 35 horses (two ponies are available for younger riders), and you’ll spend a few minutes brushing “your” horse and getting to know him or her a bit before you set out on a ride along one of the many forest trails. There are lots of other activities for groups and families—how about a treasure hunt? Not a bad idea for a children’s birthday party! Just inquire when you call to make your reservation.

Élevage Fabie

Where in Outaouais can you go for a ride in an old-fashioned carriage or calèche drawn by Canadian horses? At Élevage Fabie in Quyon! Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Pontiac to the hoofbeats of these beautiful animals. It’s a unique and memorable option for a family outing or a couples’ getaway … and the owner has assured me that should you and your significant other be feeling romantic, he’ll keep his eyes firmly fixed on the road ahead ;) . September 13 marks the 350th anniversary of the Canadian horse—don’t miss the cavalcade of 12 carriages and two dozen riders parading down Principale Street in Aylmer to celebrate the occasion!
