Suggestions for the week of May 19–25

The Outaouais region is a gigantic playground, and new activities are added every day. From the downtown core to the heart of nature, indoors and out, you’ll find plenty of things to do as a family, as a couple or with friends. It’s no exaggeration: in the Outaouais region, what we really need is a 10‑day week!

What’s on this week:

Family golf at Dunn-D’s

With the 2014 golf season well underway, now is the time to introduce your children (and maybe yourself) to this popular summer sport. The Outaouais region offers the ideal learners’ 18‑hole course, where you’ll never have a bad round—I swear on my scorecard! Get your twosome, threesome or foursome together: by a cooling waterfall or trickling stream, or at the foot of a wooden footbridge, it’s like playing several courses in one. Thanks to the scenic beauty of Dunn-D’s Mini Golf, your kids will have no problem concentrating and waiting their turn. Carved into the breathtaking landscape next to Gatineau Park, this fun and challenging course is a great place for aspiring young golfers to try out the sport.

Oiseau Rock: Spectacular views of the Ottawa River

Attention all shutterbugs: this is for you! This summer, explore the Oiseau Rock trail on foot or by mountain bike. Located in the Pontiac, home to the region’s most spectacular sunsets, the 4‑km trail (one way) offers breathtaking views of the Ottawa River. Interpretive panels along the trail tell the history of Oiseau Rock, one of the most important rock art (pictograph) sites in North America. Look up to the sky and you may spot a peregrine falcon high overhead.

40th anniversary Ottawa Race Weekend

Forty years old and still running strong! The Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend takes place May 24–26. Over the three-day weekend, some 45,000 runners will descend on Gatineau and Ottawa, and thousands of supporters and spectators will also join the party. Saturday afternoon, cheer on the runners in the 2K, 5K and 10K races; Sunday brings the start of the marathon at 7 a.m. and the half marathon at 9 a.m. All weekend long, enjoy the free Health and Fitness Expo at the Ottawa Convention Centre and free concerts at the Celebration Stage, featuring such talented artists as Gatineau’s own Billy Love Band. Are you a runner? Check out my Top 10 list of things to do in the region, designed with runners in mind. Have a great race, and see you at the starting line—or the finish line!
