7 REASONS NOT TO HATE NOVEMBER

Ask someone to name their favourite month. If they say “November,” buy a lottery ticket, pronto! The month of November is more dreaded than loved; it’s dark, it’s gloomy, it’s rainy and it’s cold. November is like those visits to your great-aunt when you were a kid, in a house where there were no toys, the only treats were hard candies as old as Methuselah, and you weren’t allowed to sit on the nice furniture.
But after an eventful year like the one we’ve just had, why not take advantage of this relatively quiet time to rest and recharge? You know—pamper yourself a little? The Outaouais is the geographical equivalent of a cozy blanket on a rainy Sunday afternoon or a mug of hot chocolate by the fireside.
Here’s what we’re talking about:
PLAN A SPA VISIT!
Most people would agree that relaxing in a thermal bath is pretty sweet, especially when the weather is cold and grey. So instead of ranting and raving against Mother Nature, escape to a spa—and the Outaouais has some nice ones!
The Nordik Spa-Nature needs no introduction, but besides the usual array of baths, treatments and relaxation areas, there are some new features, such as the Russian-inspired Banyä treatment and the Biërgarden, opened this summer, with its beautiful terrace. Rest and rejuvenation in the heart of nature!
Not far from Gatineau (about 20 minutes from downtown, in fact) is the very relaxing Amerispa Spa Nordique Cantley, with its breathtaking view of the Outaouais hills. Among other services, it offers a eucalyptus steam bath, a bistro with a health menu, and a wide range of treatments.
The rustic and welcoming Fairmont Le Château Montebello and the Wakefield Mill Hotel & Spa also have spas offering a tempting selection of luxurious treatments in a beautiful natural setting.
So go ahead, treat yourself—you deserve it!
ENJOY A CULINARY EXPERIENCE!
The squirrels know that Mother Nature is winding things down for the winter: they’re stuffing themselves like there’s no tomorrow. We’re not saying you should stuff yourself like a squirrel, but there are lots of great local restaurants where you can warm up both inside and out. Personally, I have a weakness for Poutine Tuesdays at Bistro CoqLicorne: every week brings new gourmet poutines, and every week it’s like a little taste of heaven!! We’ll talk more about restaurants in the coming weeks.
OUR MUSEUMS WELCOME BACK AN OLD FRIEND!
The Canada Science and Technology Museum reopens to the public on November 17, and not a moment too soon! It’s been closed for quite awhile during an extensive renewal of its entire space. Admit it: you can’t wait to stagger across the Crazy Kitchen one more time!
THE GREY CUP IS HAPPENING RIGHT NEXT DOOR!
CFL football fans will be in their element from November 21 to 26! As part of the celebrations of Ottawa 2017, Ottawa is hosting the Grey Cup. The game itself is sold out, but there are LOTS of activities planned to complement the supreme event in Canadian football. More details to come!
DO YOU LIKE SOLVING PUZZLES?
Lock yourself in a room with your friends, and try to solve a series of puzzles and escape within a set time limit at Dossier 325 – Escape the Room. Keep your eyes peeled, use logic, gather the information you’ll need to escape, and most of all, have wicked fun!
WINTER IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK (AND THAT’S NOT NECESSARILY A BAD THING)
Not to depress you or anything, but there’s no avoiding winter, so the best solution is to embrace it! Check out the season passes at Mont Cascades ski centre. After all, when you’re playing in it, the more snow the better!
It’s Christmas market time!
Be sure to drop by our local Christmas markets, including the one hosted by the Canadian Museum of History (November 30–December 3), to find great original gifts for everyone on your list.
We’ve barely scratched the surface! Follow us on social media, because throughout the month we’ll be featuring a whole bunch of reasons to love November. Check them out at www.outaouaistourism.com!
