August 8 to 14: 3 activities for grandparents and grandchildren

Published on August 8 2016

These days, it’s fairly common to participate in activities with your extended family, including grandparents. But it’s also nice for grandparents to organize things to do with their grandchildren—and give the parents some quality time together as a couple! This week, we’re suggesting three fun activities to do with Grandma and Grandpa.

Hike the Zizanie-des-Marais

Plaisance National Park is home to an activity that’s very popular with inquisitive kids: hiking the Zizanie-des-Marais. This 1 km trail has a floating boardwalk and a lookout tower. The marsh edge bustles day and night with birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The terrain is level, and there are several picnic areas along the way.

Pick your own, cook your own

Many grandparents love to cook, and there’s something special about cooking with fresh ingredients you’ve picked yourself! There are several places in the Outaouais where you can pick your own berries and vegetables. Spend the morning in the farm field and the afternoon in the kitchen … dessert never tasted so good! One local farm, Potager Eardley, has play structures and a mini-farm for the kids to visit.

Take a city tour by amphibus

If you want to be the coolest grandparent around, take the kids on a guided tour of the National Capital Region aboard the Lady Dive Tours amphibus. The bus/boat follows Confederation Boulevard, then plunges into the Ottawa River and crosses from the Parliament Buildings to the Canadian Museum of History. It’s a unique and fun way to see the sights and learn more about local history!
