December 21 to 27: #Outaouaisfun hostess gifts

Published on December 21 2015

This year, give your Christmas dinner hosts a unique and original gift made right here in the Outaouais!

With Outaouais chocolate, you get both quantity and quality! First, there’s Rochef Chocolatier in Gatineau, known throughout Quebec for its excellent chocolate. Delight your hosts with some delectable Rochef dark chocolate or truffles. Next comes ChocoMotive in Montebello, which has become an Outaouais tradition. Located in the former Montebello train station, this artisanal chocolate shop specializes in organic, fairly traded chocolate, and features two dozen varieties of fine chocolates and pralines. And then there’s Miss Chocolat, with its irresistible selection of truffles, chocolate wafers, pralines and other sweet treats. Chocolate rules in this lovely boutique, established in 2001 and a highlight of Gatineau’s culinary scene. Last but not least is the latest addition to our chocolate community, Chocolats Favoris, which opened its doors this summer on De la Gappe Boulevard in Gatineau and was an instant hit with Outaouais chocolate lovers. Pick up some of their famous fondue chocolate, available in 12 flavours—a perfect hostess gift!

This year, instead of giving your hosts the usual bottle of wine, offer them some Outaouais beer! Les Brasseurs du Temps (BDT) on Montcalm Street craft a range of beers with a creative flair, and their on-site boutique stocks six varieties in 750‑ml bottles. A few kilometres east is another fine establishment, Les Brasseurs de Montebello. Three of their beers—including Choco-Bello, made with cocoa from ChocoMotive—are available at several retail outlets in the region. Finally, there’s the Gainsbourg microbrewery and bistro. Opened just two years ago, it’s a relative newcomer, but its Côte Ouest #1 IPA is already an Outaouais favourite. Two more well worth a visit are Broue Ha Ha in Gatineau and the Brasse-camarade in Saint-André-Avellin, both of which stock a wide selection of Quebec craft beer. Outaouais beer: always the right size, always the right colour!

Sweets, pasta and smoked fish

Here are three great spots to shop for appetizing hostess gifts. First, there’s the Wakefield Confectionery, established in 2003. Who can say no to a box of candy? Exactly. The confectionery’s home-made preserves, fudge, candies and chocolate are all equally irresistible. Next, Pastina in Gatineau has been making fresh pasta and home-made sauces since 1986. A gift basket of fine foods from Pastina is always welcome! Your hosts will be thrilled with their selection of teas, charcuterie, and pasta and sauces made fresh daily. Finally, stop by the Chelsea Smokehouse and pick up some smoked salmon, shrimp or trout you can all enjoy as an appetizer before you dig into the Christmas turkey!
