Outdoor family fun in the Outaouais!

Published on January 15 2016

There is no better place to enjoy a great Canadian winter day outdoors with your family than in the Outaouais Region. The Outaouais was made for winter. Experience great downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snow tubing, snow shoeing, ice fishing, skating…the list is truly endless!

Camp Fortune offers fantastic outdoor family activities full of fun and adventure. You and your family can bundle up and hit the ski hills to experience the highest vertical in the Gatineau area. At Camp Fortune you can even enjoy something a little different – 12 lit runs for night skiing and snow-boarding. A perfect way to spend a winter evening with your family in the great outdoors!

Located just 75 minutes north of Gatineau, Escapade Eskimo, is the place to enjoy a full day of outdoor fun. Participate in a memorable dog sledding experience, choosing from dog sledding packages that include “The Sprint”, a one hour dog sled ride that is ideal for families with kids under 8 years of age.  The half day “Adventure” package includes the opportunity to drive a dog sleigh. In addition to dog sledding, Escapade Eskimo offers geocaching, snowshoeing, and sliding. Many of the fun packages offered at Escapade Eskimo include a visit with the animals, a snack, and a hot beverage.

Boasting the biggest snow tubing park in the Outaouais region, Edelweiss offers families a great way to enjoy a cold winter’s day by sliding down the side of this popular ski hill. Treat your family to the fun of snow tubing by day…or even by night. Edelweiss offers night lighting on their snow tubing slides for families wishing to visit in the evenings.

Join a Friends of Gatineau Park naturalist for an evening excursion into Gatineau Park – snowshoeing under the stars! Learn how plants and animals master survival in the cold winter outdoors. Bring your own snowshoes, or rent some onsite. Children’s snowshoe rental is free. After your snowshoeing experience, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate to warm you up!

Family outdoor winter fun in the Outaouais region is not complete without a visit to the beloved Winterlude festival. This year, Winterlude festivities commence on January 29th, and wrap up on February 15th. Families can enjoy all kinds of fun at Jacques-Cartier Park in the Snowflake Kingdom which features ice slides, concerts, demonstrations, local culinary delights, and so much more!

With miles of trails located inside parks, like Gatineau Park, the Outaouais region is a winter paradise for those who love to explore the outdoors by foot. Howe'ver, a great hike in the Outaouais doesn’t have to take place in the wilderness. If your family prefers an urban adventure, park the car and take a hike – over the Alexandra Bridge. Some of the best views of both Gatineau, and the city of Ottawa, can be found from this vantage point. Here you will find one of the most breath-taking views to be found in the Outaouais. At the foot of the Alexandra Bridge in Gatineau, is the Outaouais Tourism office. Take a moment to step inside, say hello to the wonderful staff, and find out more about all there is to do in the Outaouais region!
