A fairytale setting for your next romantic getaway

I don’t know about you, but as far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing like taking a break from my everyday routine to spend some quality time with my significant other! We recently found ourselves in the heart of the charming village of Montebello to spend the night in the world’s largest log building, the Fairmont Le Château Montebello resort hotel.

When the setting is almost as gorgeous as your partner

As we arrive on the grounds of the Château, we discover the impressive log castle in its magical natural setting overlooking the Ottawa River, all under a beautiful blanket of white snow. I have to say, this is a view to rival Monet’s greatest paintings.

But even this view pales in comparison to the hotel lobby, with its famous hexagonal fireplace and magnificent wooden beam ceiling. An architectural marvel.

Not to mention the hotel’s festive, family-friendly atmosphere!

When a castle gets a makeover

In case you didn’t know, the Fairmont Le Château Montebello was built in 1930, and it’s celebrating its 90th birthday in style with a fresh, modern upgrade of about 100 of its guestrooms. And we were lucky enough to spend the night in one of them!

You can imagine how eager I am to check out the décor and comfort of these updated rooms. And I’m not disappointed! The rooms have kept all their rustic charm and luxury, but they’re much brighter and more contemporary. And what can I say about the completely renovated bathroom? MAG.NI.FI.CENT!

Lounging around with your loved one, a way of life

After exploring our beautiful room, we head to the swimming pool (heated, to my delight!) to relax before dinner. After a few lengths, we settle into one of the two hot tubs, aiming for maximum relaxation, and I take the opportunity to contemplate the building’s amazing architecture.

We alternate between the pool and the hot tub until it’s time to get ready for dinner—but not before making a detour to the saunas!

An intimate gourmet evening

For dinner, we have a choice between the Aux Chantignoles restaurant, which offers gourmet fare made with fresh seasonal ingredients, or the Bistro La Seigneurie, which serves bistro-style meals in a trendy and informal atmosphere.

We opt for the Bistro, for two reasons: first, to be able to watch the football game (the NFL playoffs are on), but especially because we’re planning to have brunch at Aux Chantignoles the next day and we want to try both restaurants.

We don’t regret our decision! Great menu with super-generous portions, not to mention a wide selection of beers from local microbreweries, and large-screen TVs tuned to the sports channels … Everything is in place for a wonderful evening!

After our meal (and the football), we adjourn to the central foyer to enjoy the late-evening peace and quiet. I admit that relaxing in this majestic spot with my sweetheart is definitely the highlight of our stay!

A new day dawns at the Château

After a restful night’s sleep, there’s not a minute to waste if you want to make the most of everything the place has to offer! We wash and dress quickly and head to Aux Chantignoles for breakfast. And what a breakfast! 😮

Honestly, I didn’t expect so much variety! Fresh fruit, cheese plate, yogurt bar, pastry bar, juice and smoothie bar, and all the brunch classics: fresh-cooked omelets, sausages, bacon, home fries … There’s truly something for everyone!

When you have a world of activities to choose from

After devouring our meal, we set off to discover all the activities offered at the Fairmont Le Château Montebello. Besides the pool and spa, there’s curling, ice fishing, a Land Rover Off-Road Driving Experience, and snowmobiling, and classic winter sports such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, horse-drawn sleigh rides and dog sledding.

With all these activities, I understand why families love this place! You forgot your outdoor gear? No problem—the hotel can rent you a snowsuit!

After vacillating among curling, dog sledding and ice skating, we regretfully realize it’s time to leave. We hit the road with our heads full of new memories, and on the homeward journey we vow to return very soon!
