Back to the ’50s at the Casino!
This summer, the Casino du Lac-Leamy has brought back its popular Retro Casino theme! Until July 21, discover the ’50s Retro programming inspired by the era of Marilyn Monroe.
As a millennial, my notion of the ‘50s comes mainly from the movie Grease, which I watched so many times the videocassette fell apart (yes, I’m talking way before DVDs and Netflix). The Casino du Lac-Leamy’s ‘50s Retro theme conjured up all the classics of this cult movie: milkshakes, a jukebox and pink satin jackets! Who hasn’t dreamed of being one of the Pink Ladies alongside Rizzo and Sandy? I wonder!
A very retro welcome!
When it comes to themes, the Casino goes all the way. As soon as I enter, I’m transported to a universe worthy of a 1950s American diner! I half expect to run into John Travolta, complete with slicked-back hair and leather jacket. Near the bar, a few people are dancing to Elvis tunes. My rockabilly jive dance skills being somewhat limited, I opt to pose with them in front of the décor, wearing cat-eye sunglasses that, in my opinion and my imagination, make me look like Audrey Hepburn.
No adventure at the Casino would be complete without a signature cocktail (or two), and there are three on the menu: the Romeo’s gin and tonic, the Fuzzy Navel and the Gregory. I try the Romeo’s, a classic reimagined using gin made right here in Quebec! I savour the blend of refreshing gin and local pride in every sip.
Think’50s, and you’ll probably think sundae with a cherry on top—hence the presence of an authentic ice cream truck offering four ice cream flavours (including a vegan option) and a sundae bar with an impressive variety of toppings. I confess, I lose control and load up my sundae as if there were no tomorrow. Ah, the fabulous Fifties!
Strawberry or chocolate? Both!
Entertainment, ‘50s style!
To the sound of Paul Anka’s romantic lyrics, I mentally review the dozens of bowling games I’ve played in my life in order to improve my chances of success at Rock’n’Roll Bowling, an electronic bowling alley. The brightly lit Rock’n’Roll station attracts a crowd of onlookers. Armed with my bowling ball, I assume an expert position and launch my projectile with the concentration of an Olympic athlete. That’s when I really appreciate the combination of modern technology with the vintage charm of this often underrated sport, because I totally crush my opponent and win the grand prize!
Concentration is the key!
Thrilled by my victory, I try my luck at the slot machines. Inspired by the theme of the evening, I choose to engage with Lady Luck at the most retro machine, the one with a lever on the side. Gotta stick with the concept! The little symbols on the rollers spin before my eyes every time I pull the lever.
After all this excitement, it’s time to tear myself away from the effervescence of the ’50s. To admire the dancers in all their glory, I make a detour to the Bar 7, where they’re dancing to rock’n’roll. I get all nostalgic for a time I never knew! I can’t imagine what it will be like when the ’80s will land at the Casino July 26th!
Straight back from the '50s!
