September 14 to 20: Apples, apples and more apples!

Published on September 14 2015

Way Up High in an Apple Tree” … much better than “It’s Raining, It’s Pouring,” don’t you think? Autumn is just around the corner, and the beautiful apple blossoms of spring have ripened into shiny, delicious fruits. This week, it’s all about apples!

Apples for the whole family

Everyone loves picking apples at Potager Eardley agritourism farm! Fill your basket with fruit, go for a wagon ride in the fields, and meet the barnyard animals. You’ll score major points with the kids!

Another popular local destination is Parc Oméga. Among many other activities, you can have a picnic among the white-tailed deer (fun fact: they’re crazy about apples!), and the kids can let off steam in the brand new aerial park, just down the path from the enchanted forest house.

Visit the Wakefield Confectionery and treat the little ones to a free caramel apple.* Little sticky fingers, big sticky smiles! (*Available on September 26-27 and October 2 to 4)

For the one with the Adam’s apple

Here are two great activity combos for Dad:

At Timberland Tours, in the heart of the Pontiac, go dogsledding along sandy trails through the woods. Yes, you read that right: you can go dogsledding even when there’s no snow! Meet the resident pack of dogs, a mix of greyhound, German pointer, and Alaskan Husky that makes for some of the fastest sled dogs on the planet! Then climb aboard a custom-made dryland rig on wheels, hitch up the team, and set off on your adventure. Round out the day with a visit to Coronation Hall Cider Mills, where Dad (and the rest of your pack) can chow down on a piece of apple pie just like Grandma used to make.

Get off the beaten path (literally) at Canada’s only Land Rover Experience driving school, located at Kenauk Nature in Montebello. Starting with the introductory course, you’ll be guided through a challenging series of obstacles. This exciting experience is open to drivers of all skill levels! Afterwards, wet your whistle with a cold beer or a refreshing apple cider at the Brasseurs de Montebello microbrewery and pub.

Dad will be thrilled to the core by all this adrenalin!

Motherhood and apple pie

Treat Mom to the very finest in regional cuisine! A few possibilities: L’Orée du Bois offers a truly decadent brunch featuring such delights as country-style terrine, caramelized squash with maple and butter, and baked apples with brown sugar and cinnamon. Aux Chantignoles at the Fairmont Le Château Montebello is known for its regional specialties, top-notch cuisine, and special treats (and all the apples come from the nearby Croque-pomme orchard). At the Muse restaurant at Wakefield Mill, the tempting menu includes caramelized foie gras mousse with taro chips, cranberry and apple chutney, and green tea jelly, and the price includes the spectacular view of the nearby waterfall.

For a more casual, equally delicious meal, the Bistro CoqLicorne in Gatineau is sure to please Mom. Try the “Forbidden Fruit” (a sandwich made with apples, old cheddar, spiced butter and caramelized onions) or the “Original Sin” (tapas made with crostini and apples).

And if Dad is one smart apple, he’ll impress Mom by paying for the meal … he’ll be the apple of her eye!
