The Snowflake Kingdom : Snow slides, snow sculptures and a zip line
Do you like free winter activities in one convenient location? Snow slides, games, a zip line … There’s fun for the whole family at the Snowflake Kingdom, January 31 to February 27, 2020 at Jacques Cartier Park.
I don’t know about your kids, but mine like to be active and stimulated. After awhile, their attention needs to be directed to another activity. A day in the Snowflake Kingdom will make both Mom and the kids happy!
Winterlude has seven destinations: the Snowflake Kingdom, Sparks Street, the ByWard Market, the Rideau Canal Skateway, Downtown Rideau, Bank Street and the Glebe. And thanks to the free OLG Sno-Bus shuttle service, you can get around without worrying about parking, which makes for better family memories for everyone!
Did you know that It takes about 30,000 cubic metres of artificial snow to build the snow slides and other Snowflake Kingdom structures. Impressive!
Winter fun for everyone
We often visit the Snowflake Kingdom on opening weekend (January 31 and February 1 this year) so that we can watch the snow sculptors at work. The first thing we do when we get to the site is go on the snow slides, because their imposing presence catches the kids’ attention! There will be 15 snow slides this year, including Bout de chou slides for tiny tots. Like the snow sculptures, the slides will be lit up at night.
For more confident kids, there will be an obstacle course, a scavenger hunt and a tug of war, while budding musicians can discover the world of percussion in the Baratanga Igloo. If you get chilly (and hungry!), you can warm up by the outdoor fireplaces while you sip a hot chocolate or sample a BeaverTailÒ pastry. Our visit often ends by the warmth of the fire among the strolling entertainers, especially … the famous Ice Hog family! Although little ones are particularly impressed by the furry mascots, older kids love to snuggle up to them, year after year!
You absolutely must try the giant zip line.
Activities for older kids
Calling all thrillseekers: You absolutely must try the giant zip line—it’s often a good way to persuade your significant other to accompany you! Fly over the Snowflake Kingdom and admire the breathtaking view of the Ottawa River. Note that there’s a fee for this activity.
If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, you can play giant board games like Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect 4 and Snakes and Ladders. Kids ages 5 to 8 can take an introductory lesson in downhill skiing or snowboarding. (It’s a great opportunity to gauge their interest before you actually hit the slopes!)
We’re betting the whole family will love this active day outdoors! For us, the Snowflake Kingdom is an annual winter tradition. No matter the weather, young and old alike always have a great time!
