This summer’s must-try cultural experiences!
The Outaouais region is rich in history and heritage, and during the summer season it offers a wide variety of enriching cultural activities. From museums and historic sites to art exhibitions and live shows, a great selection awaits you!
Immerse yourself in local history
Until September 5, the Symmes Inn Museum invites you to view three free exhibitions:
- Symmes Inn: Windows onto the Ottawa River (permanent exhibition)
- By Forests and Rivers, Men of Courage (temporary exhibition)
- The Great Aylmer Fire of 1921 (temporary exhibition)
There are also screenings of a short film entitled Hannah—The Symmes Inn Legend, which tells the tragic story of Charles Symmes’ young daughter.
Discover the many facets of this former hotel, which once welcomed travellers along the Ottawa River. Marvel at the courage of the lumberjacks during the forestry boom and the firefighters who braved the flames that ravaged downtown Aylmer in 1921.
Open Tuesday to Sunday from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Learn more about this national historic site that has witnessed so many events over the centuries.
Marvel at the Manoir Papineau
After two years of restoration work to protect this heritage property, the Manoir Papineau National Historic Site has reopened to the public. As of June 26, you’re invited to come to Montebello and tour the magnificent 19th-century home built by Louis-Joseph Papineau, a great politician who left his mark on Canadian history. With its beautiful gardens, vast lawns and a wooded area crossed by a stream, this impressive estate, where nature and history meet, will delight you.
Until September 6, the site is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for visitors age 17 and under, so it’s a great place to discover with your family!
A unique way to explore Old Hull
Thanks to the Go Centre-ville application (available from the App Store and Google Play), you can walk through the streets of Old Hull while learning more about important milestones in the city’s history, right on your phone!
The Old Hull Chronicles is a brand new heritage tour to try out with family and friends this summer. On foot or by bike, explore the downtown core as you search for the points of interest on the map. With one click, the application calls up video clips about each location, narrated by historic figures who helped shape the history of Old Hull.
It’s a trip back in time to the heart of a neighbourhood that has a lot of stories to tell!
