The Snowflake Kingdom, North America’s largest snow playground!

Published on February 4 2016

Until February 15, families are invited to come out and play in the Snowflake Kingdom during Winterlude, the region’s annual winter celebration. The theme for this 38th edition of the event is Discover the Great Canadian North, and for the next two weekends the National Capital Region will be transformed into a winter paradise to delight young and old alike. Enjoy a flurry of free activities at the biggest snow playground on the continent! More than 35,000 cubic metres of snow were made to create this winter wonderland. Warning: once you’ve entered the Snowflake Kingdom, you won’t want to leave!

Free Activities

The most popular attractions are definitely the giant snow slides, with fun and laughter guaranteed for the whole family. Each slide has its own exhilarating appeal. The Chinook, the biggest slide, is a tube slide that will give you a rush! The Iceberg and the Glacier are snow slides that you can plunge down by yourself or with a group, and the Bout de chou is just the right size and slope for the younger set. These slides are so cool that Mom and Dad will be first in line to try them!

After you’ve zoomed down the slides a few times, there are lots of other free activities to try. Check out the Kiddie Zone, with play structures for little tykes; giant versions of favourite family games, including Connect Four and hopscotch; a free introduction to downhill skiing with qualified instructors, for ages 5 to 8; a miniature 3D village little car course for ages 6 and under; kicksledding; strolling entertainers; and snowboarding and downhill skiing demonstrations.

Over at the Snowflake Stage you’ll find free live entertainment for all ages. Little kids will love Atchoum and BaraTambours, the Nunavut Sivuniksavut troupe will impress older kids with their traditional throat singing and drum dances, and trad–folk group La Ridaine will get everyone’s toes tapping (even inside winter boots!). The famous Mama and Papa Ice Hog mascots will be on hand, along with their children, Noumi and Nouma, who are well known for their warm hugs for kids, and for how much they love being photographed! (Pssst: Sunday, February 14 is the Ice Hog twins’ birthday. Come join the celebration!)

Finally, from February 12 to 15, discover the joys of playing outside with your favourite characters in the Snowtime! (La Guerre des Tuques 3D) activity zone, and explore the giant snow fort in the Snowflake Kingdom.

For many families, the Snowflake Kingdom has become an annual gathering place and a real winter highlight. Before you leave, be sure to visit the XTREME Zone, with challenges for every taste: inflatable games, a merry-go-round, a zip line, and dog sled rides. Adults are more than welcome, because as everybody knows, there’s no age limit on having fun!

No family outing to Winterlude would be complete without a stop for a BeaverTail pastry and a hot chocolate—a great way to top off an active day outdoors. New this year is the Maple Corner, where you can sweeten up your day with local food and sample different maple products, accompanied by traditional music by the fireside.

If you’re lucky enough to visit after dark, you’ll see that all the slides and snow sculptures are lit up at night. As well, with “Between Sky and Sea” as a theme, the magic of multimedia art brings a huge snow sculpture to life, Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m.

Every year, more than 200,000 visitors participate in activities at Winterlude’s Snowflake Kingdom. Will you and your family be among them this winter? Click here to view a detailed calendar of events at the 38th annual Winterlude.
