January 5 to 11: 3 free activities to make the holidays last longer

January 5 2015

The kids are back at school and you’re back at work. It’s hard to get back to your regular routine after hanging out with the family over the holidays! To keep that holiday spirit going and, more important, to enjoy winter to the max, here are three free activities for the whole family:

Guided snowshoe tours in Gatineau Park

On Saturdays and Sundays beginning January 10, participate in Gatineau Park’s guided snowshoe tours, Animal Tracking on Snowshoes. Led by an experienced naturalist, learn to identify the tracks of the different animals that live in the park. Each tour lasts 2 hours, and snowshoes are provided.

Push, push, glide!

Skaters are spoiled in the Outaouais, with dozens of free skating rinks throughout the region. While you’re waiting for the official opening of the Rideau Canal Skateway, the world’s largest skating rink, you can practise your spins at one of the City of Gatineau’s 89 outdoor rinks, at the Rideau Hall rink (open on weekends), or at the Sens Rink of Dreams outside Ottawa City Hall.

Cross-country skiing in Blue Sea

Nature lovers will enjoy the Municipality of Blue Sea’s 10 km of marked and groomed cross-country ski trails. Access is free, and the trails are just the right length for a family excursion. Choose among six trails ranging from easy to intermediate, and warm up by the wood stove in the trailside shelter before you head back to your starting point. Click here to view the trail map!
