Mountain biking … in winter

Winter biking (fat biking) is increasingly popular. We loved our experience as a couple!

Lighter and easier to handle than I’d imagined, a winter bike is very enjoyable. After taming the beast and figuring out how the gears worked, we set off on a novice trail. The uphills were easier than I expected, and the downhills were more fun! I loved “sliding” on the bike.

The day we went, there wasn’t much snow, so the rocks, roots and tree trunks were quite exposed. Although the tires are designed to roll over these obstacles, the ride required some adaptation. A hefty dose of technique and concentration was required. I’ll definitely go back when there’s more snow!

As with all equipment rentals, the best way to do it is online. On the other hand, as fat bikes are in high demand, plan your outing in advance. Certain bike sizes are very popular!

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing

Gatineau Park’s trails offer endless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, with routes ranging from 5 to 51 km. Since it was our children’s first time on skis, we didn’t venture too far. The older one found a hill where she could practise her downhill skiing, while the younger one focused on coordinating his limbs as best he could.

They much preferred snowshoeing. We’re glad we did a trial run before we purchased any equipment. Cross-country skiing will be for next winter!

Après-ski and yoga, still possible!

After working up a sweat and burning off energy, why not extend the pleasure? Treat yourself to pastries, hot drinks and homemade meals at the Café des Sentiers.

The Relais has adapted and still offers virtual yoga classes. Seasonal memberships are available (12 weeks) for just $13.33/week or $1.90/class.

When health regulations permit, other activities will be resumed. For example, a two-hour nature interpretation activity on snowshoes for the whole family will introduce you to the natural heritage of Gatineau Park and its history. Cross-country skiing lessons will also be offered.

It will also be possible to rent spaces and rooms for family or team meetings. The Relais plein air is currently undergoing renovations that will improve the customer experience and allow the Relais to stay open year round.
