Breathtaking scenery, majestic forest trails and magnificent waterways all contribute to making the region a must for running enthusiasts. Whether you're a road runner or a nature trail enthusiast, the region has something for every kind of runner. Whatever your pace, you'll find something here to nurture your passion for the sport.
If the forest appeals to you, the region abounds with a multitude of possibilities! With its vertical drops, technical trails and impressive scenery, the Outaouais offers forest trails perfect for training, pushing your limits or simply varying your routine. Many sites are easily accessible and suitable for all levels of runner. Known as the green lung of the Outaouais region, Gatineau Park is a true outdoor paradise, offering many different sports all year round. It offers a multitude of trails criss-crossing 361 sq.km of hills, forests and breathtaking scenery. Mackenzie King Estate, Philippe Lake and the Brazilian Trail are just some of the must-sees. The Chute et Lauriault trail, a favorite of the famous politician William Lyon Mackenzie King, offers a 5-kilometer loop through the forest. You'll discover his former home, enchanting gardens and, of course, the waterfalls that give the trail its charm. Looking for an inspiring backdrop for your run? The Philippe Lake trail follows the water on a 10-kilometre loop. For discovery seekers, a short detour will allow you to explore the fascinating Lusk Cave. Another trail to explore is the Brazilian Trail (#79), which begins on Notch Road near Old Chelsea Village. Definitely a favorite! This 7 km trail combines easy sections with more technical sections, perfect for varying your pace. What's more, it leads directly onto the parkway, allowing for several possible routes. After your run, stop by La Cigale Ice Cream Shop for a gourmet ice cream. Looking for variety? In the Vallée-de-la-Gatineau, The PERO trails offer 12 trails for running to your heart's content. Routes of varying distances and levels take you through spectacular scenery, from the park's magnificent waterfalls at Denholm, to the summits of Mont Morissette at Blue Sea and Mont Cayamant. In Gracefield, the trails around Mud Lake and Majopial Village are ideal for those who prefer shorter, more accessible routes, with gentle climbs and lovely views. Looking for positive elevation changes? Head to Camp Fortune and Centre Vorlage to climb the mountains! These two ski mountains are excellent training sites for racers looking for a challenge. Both offer mountain bike trails accessible to racing. However, it's important to stay alert and share the trails with other cyclists. A climb through the forest takes you to the summit. For straightforward access and a good physical challenge, climb straight up the mountain to the peak. Looking for a mountain trail with breathtaking views? The Parc des Montagnes Noires de Ripon awaits you with 17 trails totaling 25 kilometers to explore. The Big Loop trail, a 7 km loop ideal for trail running, takes you to the summit of Mont Grand-Pic. Along the way, you'll cross some large boulders before taking a short break at the observation tower. Standing 12 metres high, it offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the Petite Nation. A breathtaking vantage point well worth the effort!
Running on the road also means discovering charming villages and being surprised by everyday landscapes. With 145 kilometers of bike paths and enchanting waterways, the Outaouais region offers many places to run. The bike paths along the riverbanks are perfect for a peaceful ride combining panorama and greenery. The Voyageurs Pathway offers 30 kilometers of exceptional views of the Gatineau River. The section through Jacques-Cartier Park is a real favorite, offering a magnificent view of Parliament Hill and the Canadian Museum of History. Another popular trail is the loop around Leamy Lake Park. Easy and pleasant, this 2.4-kilometre loop offers spectacular views of the lake. The Voie Verte linking Chelsea to Wakefield is also impressive. This low-traffic option is a superb way to discover the region, passing through several small villages. For almost 20 kilometers along the Gatineau River, this trail is a haven of peace, far from the noise. The Relais plein air du parc de la Gatineau is an ideal starting point for a nature run, whether on pavement or on a mixed course. Located at the entrance to the P2 trail, it provides access to several routes. Explore the park on its variety of bike paths. A popular route is to head to Pink Lake and complete the 2.3-kilometer loop. You'll have the chance to admire this pretty emerald lake and the flora surrounding it. To get there, take the Sentier du Ruisseau-Leamy followed by trail #25. Plan your hike ahead using the Gatineau Park Trail Map. The Véloroute des Draveurs, which stretches over 72 km, is a magnificent trail that takes you through picturesque landscapes in the heart of nature. Along the way, you can admire impressive flora and ride along the beautiful Blue Sea Lake between the municipalities of Messines and Blue Sea. Embark on an adventure in the pretty village of Wakefield, where running becomes a real pleasure. Follow the river and discover the pretty local stores up to the famous covered bridge. Pause for a refreshing dip, then head back to the heart of the village. And why not round off your outing with a gourmet stop on one of the splendid terraces overlooking the river? Try Café Le Hibou, Café Earle, Wakefield Bakery or La Confiserie Wakefield to finish on a high note!
Running with someone is always more fun! Why not join a running club and turn your outings into weekly get-togethers? For the early birds, head to Bobino Bagel at 5:45 a.m. with the 6 AM Club. This group organizes accessible road running outings with a social rhythm. To crown it all, you can enjoy delicious homemade bagels as a post-run reward. In Chelsea, the Thursday after-park at Nomades du Parc are a real classic. If you haven't already done so, now's the time to give it a try. Departure at 5:30 p.m. for an outing on the trails of Gatineau Park. There are two options: a 10 to 15 km course or a 5 to 10 km course. The race ends in style with a festive after-park where people gather around a DJ, food and refreshments. Always on the trail, the Trails Sisters organize women's running events every Monday in Chelsea. Whether you're new to trail running or a regular, this group is open to all. Trails vary from week to week, with distances of around 10 kilometers. Follow their Facebook page to find out about upcoming sessions! Several other running clubs are active in the area. From May 24 to 26, experience one of the biggest running events in the country with the Tamarack Ottawa Race Week! Take in some of the best views in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. From 2 km to a marathon, including 5 km, 10 km and half-marathon, there’s something for everyone … even children! On August 17, lace up your shoes for the demi-marathon de La Voie Verte in Chelsea! This 21.1-kilometre race will run from Wakefield to Chelsea. The route will be magnificent! Only a few spots left for the 1 km and 5 km distances. On August 24, climb the mountain at Camp Fortune during their first edition of the Grit and Grind presented by Arc’teryx. A physical challenge awaits you! On September 14 and 28, take part in the Défi coureur des bois in the Vallée-de-la-Gatineau! A trail event accessible to all, featuring several trails and lengths. On September 21, take part in the Canada Army Run. Join thousands of others in honouring our military by choosing the distance that suits you best! On September 27, it’s time for the Courons Gatineau event. This race showcases the region’s many waterways and guarantees awesome trails. You might even get the chance to meet with spokesperson Audrey Leduc, and Olympian in track and field! On October 12, rediscover Wakefield from another angle during the BougeBouge Wakefield Covered Bridge Run! Mark your calendars! The much-anticipated Trail des Collines will return in May next year at the Centre Vorlage!
