A fantastic weekend in the Outaouais
You’ll be surprised by all the things you can do in the Outaouais in a single weekend. Plan this little getaway with your family, with friends or on your own to discover a new part of the country. Plus, there’s no need to stress out over logistics: we’ve put together an original tour of Gatineau and the Collines-de-l’Outaouais. Just follow the guide!
DAY 1 - Gatineau
Ottawa to Gatineau by zip line
The best view of the region is definitely from a zip line! Start your trip in style … 36 metres (120 feet) in the air, as you fly across the Ottawa River on Interzip Rogers. The world’s first interprovincial zip line will certainly give you a thrill. At a speed of 40 km/h, the fresh morning air is a real waker-upper!
40, Jos-Montferrand St., Gatineau (Quebec)
You can experience the adventure in tandem, each on your own cable.
Forever Changed
A few steps from the Interzip Rogers launch tower is the Canadian War Museum. It’s time to stop by and discover the immersive exhibition Forever Changed, which traces the history of the Second World War through the touching personal stories of Canadian men and women. Created to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the end of the war, the exhibition is sure to engage and fascinate you.
An unconventional terrace in the heart of downtown
It’s time for a bite to eat! Head across the river to Old Hull. With its turquoise, pink and yellow accents, the new Îlot Terrace, on the roof of the Leduc parkade, has a southern vibe. Perfect for eating, drinking, relaxing or even teleworking (free Wi-Fi!), the colourful terrace offers a fantastic view of the region. Order from the largest outdoor menu in the province and give a helping hand to local restaurateurs—and, of course, enjoy yourself!
15, Leduc St., Gatineau (Quebec)
Once there, visit the website to consult the complete directory of the food offer. Specialty coffees and refreshments are available on site.
Happiness on two wheels
After your meal, opt for the easiest and most enjoyable way to get around the Outaouais: by bike. With its 300 km of recreational pathways, Gatineau’s cycling network is seamlessly integrated with that of the national capital. Tour the downtown area and its many green spaces, beaches and tourist attractions; ride along waterways and take as many breaks as you like at beautiful landscaped rest areas. The city has earned Silver certification from Vélo Québec’s “Vélosympathique” movement, and there are six bike repair stations in case you run into problems with your bike.
After a busy first day, it’s time to relax for the evening. Don’t forget to book your accommodation before you leave. Hotel, B&B, inn, campsite or cottage—there’s a place for everyone.
DAY 2 – Collines-de-l’Outaouais
Just fifteen minutes from downtown, the Collines-de-l’Outaouais will charm you. Its forests, lakes and hilly roads offer a welcome escape from city life. The picturesque villages of Chelsea and Wakefield, with their unique shops and charming restaurants, are very pleasant to visit.
Saddle up!
Book your time with the horses at Captiva Farms, Eastern Canada’s largest horse farm! Founded over 30 years ago, the 180-hectare (450-acre) ranch is an enchanting, quiet and safe place to learn to ride. Pony rides (for children), riding lessons and excursions on horseback are offered according to your level. A moment out in the outdoors with over 60 horses is an experience you won’t soon forget.
189 De la Montagne Rd., Wakefield (Quebec)
This activity is available by reservation only.
