Although December is the last month of the year, it can often mark many firsts: a first snowfall for some, a first Christmas together for others. It’s a time to gather and spend time with family and friends and enjoy activities that will become our fondest memories. Check out our suggestions, and take advantage of the magic of December to create all the firsts you can before the year is up.

Winter outings galore

Here’s a list of 100 activities to put on your bucket list to make the most of winter and never run out of ideas. Rediscover winter classics, try unique activities or be charmed by beautiful places. Take part in the opening of the Eco-Odyssée Nature Park‘s ice maze, scheduled for December 20. Take a skate on about twenty intersections spread over several kilometers of icy trails. On December 22, Christmas music will be featured and on December 29, festive New Year’s Day rigodons will be performed. In the evening, stroll along the illuminated paths or under the moonlight with your headlamp.

Explore the depths of the Laflèche Cave, the largest visited cave in the Canadian Shield. Learn about the history of the cave and see the ice stalactites and stalagmites. You may even catch sight of a few bats!

Spend the night at Fairmont Le Château Montebello, the world’s largest log castle, and step out of your comfort zone by trying a new precision sport, curling. Sign up for a curling clinic with instructors and become broom virtuosos. Afterwards, warm up in the lobby by the majestic fireplace.

Try a new experience and go winter camping or glamping. Discover the region’s ski centres and their snowy slopes. Put on your cross-country skis or snowshoes and go on an adventure on the many kilometres of trails in the Outaouais.

Events with a holiday feel

Registration for this year’s Canadian Ski Marathon (CSM) opens on December 1! The CSM, North America’s oldest cross-country ski event, will take place from February 10 to 12, 2023, and will start in the Montebello region. Sign up before December 18 and save on your registration fee. Share your passion for the sport with other cross-country enthusiasts! Skiers of all ages and abilities are invited to cover distances ranging from 12 to 160 kilometres on classic groomed trails through a breathtaking winter landscape. Choose your challenge!

On Friday, December 2, bundle up and attend the free Réveillon Agora holiday celebration at the AGORA Public Square. Annie Villeneuve will perform a Christmas concert, and there will be a nutcracker band. Come sing Christmas carols next to a 40-foot Christmas tree.

From December 8 to January 8 inclusive, Thursday to Monday, come to Parliament Hill to watch the multimedia projection presented by Winter Lights Across Canada. The show combines colourful digital imagery with a haunting soundtrack, and there’s a spot where you can take selfies! Stroll along Confederation Boulevard, which will be illuminated by hundreds of thousands of lights to create the Pathway of Lights. Follow this ceremonial route past many historic monuments and sites.

Head to Principale Street in the heart of Old Aylmer to visit the 5e Baron microbrewery. The brewery opened in 2020; that same year, it won the RateBeer award for the third best new microbrewery in the world. Taste their products while admiring their gigantic Christmas tree.

On Friday and Saturday nights, buy tickets or reserve a booth at Club Aléa. Put your name on the VIP list and get in free before 11:30pm. After a temporary closure, the nightclub is finally open again! Come dance to the rhythm of the DJs and treat yourself to a cocktail.
