Things to do in the Outaouais in February
February is the ideal month to celebrate winter: the temperatures are colder and there are masses of snow! This makes it the best month of the season to try all the winter activities you’ve been dreaming of. Here are our suggestions for this month!
Skating in the fresh air
Did you know that the Outaouais is a skater’s paradise? It has some of the most beautiful skating rinks in Quebec, from the heart of the forest to the downtown core. In case you need convincing, here’s our list of the region’s top 10 rinks. And lest we forget, Canada’s Capital Region is home to the world’s largest natural skating rink, the Rideau Canal Skateway, with 7.8 kilometres of free skating available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (weather permitting). Get your skates on!
Discover the literary arts
Book lovers, plan to attend the 43rd edition of the Salon du livre de l’Outaouais, which will be held in virtual format from February 24 to 27! The event includes entertainment, round tables, activities and family programming, all under the theme Lire l’avenir (“reading the future”). Don’t miss the show Projet Terre, broadcast online on Sunday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m.!
From February 10 to March 6, experience the Salon du livre in a different way thanks to the Loop installation in downtown Gatineau. Discover Quebec stories in one of the six futuristic-looking luminous cylinders. This initiative is produced in partnership with Vision Centre-ville, the City of Gatineau, the Salon du livre de l’Outaouais and Outaouais Tourism. These installations of the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership are a creation of Ottoblix, Jonathan Villeneuve and Olivier Girouard (Ekumen) and are produced by Creos.
Exploring the cross-country ski trails
With all this beautiful snow, you can count on the Outaouais’ trails for a memorable cross-country ski outing. More than 500 kilometres of classic and skate-style cross-country skiing possibilities—what do you say?
And if you’re the type of person who likes a challenge, we have two cross-country ski events for you! The Canadian Ski Marathon returns starting February 5 in a virtual format for its 56th edition. This is your opportunity to participate in this legendary event at your own pace, on your own time and on the course of your choice! From February 18 to 20, you can also participate in the Gatineau Loppet, Canada’s most renowned cross-country ski event. With races of 5, 10, 15, 25 or 50 kilometres, find a challenge that suits you.
Have an #OutaouaisFun Valentine’s Day
On this romantic day, take the opportunity to get out of the house! Find a place to stay in the Outaouais for the weekend, just the two of you. Don’t forget to bring some bubbly! During the day, relax with a winter activity—any one of them, there are plenty of great outdoor choices. To top off your stay, order a delicious takeout brunch on your way home.
Try ice fishing
With the cold weather comes thick ice on our lakes and rivers. This is the perfect time to try ice fishing with your family or friends. There are plenty of trout in our lakes, even in winter! Of course, we won’t send you out there unprepared. Kenauk Nature, Pêche Blanche Gatineau and the Centre touristique du Lac-Simon offer packages for an authentic and hassle-free ice fishing experience. Who’ll catch the first fish?
